MUPUNDU ENERGY LTD

Mupundu Energy Ltd, established on September 1, 2020 (Registration No. 1202000007117), is a pioneer in renewable energy production in Zambia. Leveraging cutting-edge anaerobic digestion (AD) technology, we transform agricultural and livestock waste into biogas, supplying electricity to the national grid and private clients. Alongside this, we are dedicated to large-scale maize and soybean farming, advancing food security and fostering rural economic growth.

What is Anaerobic Digestion (AD)?

Anaerobic digestion is a process that breaks down organic waste in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas (methane) that can be used for energy generation and digestate, which can be used as organic fertilizer.

How does Mupundu Energy contribute to food security?

Mupundu Energy is investing in large-scale maize and soyabean farming to improve local food production and reduce Zambia’s reliance on imports. We also provide organic fertilizer through the digestate produced in our biogas process.

What are the environmental benefits of Mupundu Energy’s projects?

Our anaerobic digestion (AD) biomass power plant technology effectively captures carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and other greenhouse gases that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere through the direct decomposition or application of plant and livestock waste to land. By mitigating methane emissions—a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential significantly higher than CO₂—this process contributes to reducing the overall carbon footprint of agricultural operations.

Furthermore, this system supports sustainable farming practices by converting organic waste into valuable biogas and nutrient-rich digestate, which can serve as a natural fertilizer. By bottling surplus biogas, the plants provide a cleaner, renewable alternative to traditional charcoal for cooking, thereby alleviating reliance on biomass fuel, reducing indoor air pollution, and helping to combat deforestation.

What is a CHP Engine?

CHP engine refers to a Combined Heat and Power engine. This type of engine is designed to simultaneously generate both electricity and useful heat from the biogas produced by anaerobic digestion

 

What is a Digester?

a digester is a key component where the process of anaerobic digestion takes place. It is a sealed, oxygen-free (anaerobic) environment where organic materials, such as agricultural waste, food scraps, or sewage sludge, are broken down by microorganisms to produce biogas.

What is Digestate?

Digestate is the nutrient-rich organic material that remains after the anaerobic digestion (AD) process has broken down organic waste to produce biogas. It consists primarily of undigested solids, water, and nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are essential for plant growth.

There are typically two main fractions of digestate:

  1. Solid Fraction: Contains fibrous materials and can be used as a soil conditioner or compost.
  2. Liquid Fraction: Contains dissolved nutrients and is often used as a liquid fertilizer.

Digestate is highly valued in agriculture because it can be applied directly to fields to improve soil fertility, reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers, and promote sustainable farming practices. Additionally, its use helps recycle nutrients, contributing to a circular economy in agricultural and waste management systems.
